I must say, I didn't know what I was watching until the very last 20 minutes. The film doesn't provide anything solid to stick with it as we don't have any clue about the characters and the motive behind their actions. I won't be surprised if people stop watching it in the mid-way or go to sleep mode. Luckily I survived till that point and then almost everything starts to become clear as a sky. As soon as we become more intrigued the film ends.
So what this movie is about? It's about a man who is rude to people for some reason, insecure, and always wants to be the authority. As I understood, the film uses him to represent masculinity and arrogance. To know where does all this leads him, you need to watch this film.
Unlike many 4/4+ star reviews, I don't see anything in this film to rate it that high. In a 2 hour film, most of the actors are underutilized like Jesse Plemons and Geneviève Lemon. Kodi Smit and Benedict Cumberbatch shine but the rest all the actors just do a fine job. It's because of the way characters are written.
Camera work and background music grab our attention. Ari Wegner did a wonderful job as a cinematographer. The film lets us see beyond the beauty of landscapes and fields. The shades and costumes are perfect as well.
What this film lacks is a gripping story and the characters with whom as an audience we want to connect. Initially, we do have a connection with Peter (played by Smit) but then all of a sudden he disappears from the film just to appear back in the third act of the film. This is bad writing in my opinion. Such irregularities make this film less audience-friendly.
Conclusion: The Power of the Dog, holds its cards till the very end but unfortunately that is too late for both the film and for the audience. The ending isn't disappointing, we do get a conclusion but the way it ends is a little disappointing. If you can stick yourself to your couch even if nothing interesting happens on the screen then you can definitely watch this film.
The Power of the Dog is now streaming on Netflix.
