Each one of us has wondered (at least once in our life), what happens once we say goodbye to this world. Pixar Studio's Soul tries to explore that philosophy. Let's analyze what's in there for the viewers in Pete Docter's latest addition to his Pixar universe.
Joe Gardner is a jazz pianist living an ordinary life like most of us. Music is all he thinks about from the moment he wakes up in the morning to the moment he falls asleep at night. But one day he meets an accident and the next moment he's on a conveyor belt going towards what is called The Great Beyond. Unwilling to accept that it's the end, he resists and falls down from the belt and lands in a different place known as The Great Before. The Great Before is a place where fresh souls are moulded and made earth-ready. Joe now gets the responsibility to mould Soul 22, who is a kinda permanent resident of the place. She has a long list of famous mentors like Muhammed Ali, Mother Teresa, Copernicus, etc. but nobody was successful in identifying her spark.

Joe Gardner from Soul |
I remember watching Inside Out a few years back which deals with the roles of different types of emotions and it mostly exists in the inner world of emotions. Unlike that film Soul mostly takes place in the real world, still, it doesn't hit you emotionally. It's the journey of Joe rather than his soul. Why did I say that? The reason is, that even though Joe is at the great beyond, the story talks about his life on earth, and most of the film is devoted to fixing it. My mind was ready for an exceptional journey to experience the magic of that unseen world, but maybe I was expecting too much from it.
Soul isn't a disappointing movie. There are so many amazing and entertaining aspects of this film. The beauty of this film is that it tries to maintain balance (as much as possible) between the pre-death and past-life worlds. Soul's music is its soul. This film tries to make the complex topic of the afterlife so easy that it can be easily understood by the children as well (undoubtedly in a funnier way). The one thing which I like the most about Pete Doctor's films is that they are not bound to any age group. The topic of this film itself is so wide and this is why this film may not equally strike every viewer's soul. It's up to us what we want to conclude from this film.

A Scene from Soul(2020) |
The basic plot is predictable and hence the ending doesn't surprise us at all. Are there plot holes? Yes (many), but it doesn't make any sense to talk about them because the film itself doesn't try to be hyperintelligent. The motive of the film is very clear- Each and every soul has a spark and you will eventually come face to face with it in your life, but you have to decide if you want to nurture that spark and make it the secret of your success or not. Also, there is a very fine line between joy and obsession. If you cross that line you will end up as a lost soul.
All in all, Soul isn't a must-watch film but it's the film you should watch (if possible, with your family). There is nothing which is disappointing in this film. Its heart-touching music undoubtedly provides relief. This is without any second thought the best-animated film we got this year.
