It was the year 2013 when James Wan's The Conjuring took the theatres by storm and unexpectedly grossed over $300 million. That was just the beginning of the most successful horror franchise in the history of cinema. After all these years, this universe is now expanded to 8 movies, 7 of which have been released, and the 8th film i.e. Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It is ready to hit the theatres in upcoming weeks.
It's the perfect time to revisit and refresh our memories of this spooky universe. This is why we have brought you the release order, the chronological order, and the ranking of all the films of this universe. It's your choice which way you want to revisit it.
The Conjuring Universe: Release Order
The Conjuring (2013)

Plot: Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga play the real-life supernatural investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. In 1971 Warrens on the request of Carolyn and Roger Perron, investigate the presence of a demonic entity at their farmhouse.
To this date, The Conjuring holds its reputation as the spookiest film of the franchise. It's the skills of James Wan which increase the horror effect a thousand times.
Connection with Universe: The Conjuring films are based on the true events from the case files of Warrens. At the end of the film, we get to see a glimpse of Warren's artifact room with Annabelle locked inside a glass box which directly connects it to Annabelle Comes Home (2019) which takes place just a year after this film.

Annabelle (2014)

Plot: When John gifts a doll to his pregnant wife, soon they start to feel some strange presence in their house.
Although we see a glimpse of the evil doll Annabelle in the first Conjuring film, it's this film where she's the main antagonist. The film tries to scare the viewers with the use of jump scares here and there but in the end, it was a huge letdown from the story point of view. Undoubtedly, it's the worst film of the franchise.
Connection with Universe: The brief appearance by Higgins and Warrens connects this film to Annabelle: Creation and The Conjuring respectively. Also Father Perez's character connects it with The Curse of La Llorona.

The Conjuring 2 (2016):

Plot: The Warrens help a single mother and her four daughters, terrorized by a strong supernatural spirit.
After the successful The Conjuring, James Wan returns once again with his second film of the franchise: The Conjuring 2, and magically this film replicates the success of its predecessor.
Connection with Universe: Just like the first Conjuring film, this one is also based on true events from the case files of Warrens: The Enfield Case.
It also introduces us to the Crooked Man (a stand-alone movie is in development according to the rumors) although, Valak serves as its main antagonist. We get to know more about Valak in The Nun (2018).

Annabelle: Creation (2017)

Plot: The origin story of the possessed porcelain doll Annabelle, takes place back in 1955. Mullins, who lost their daughter Annabelle in an accident, invites a spirit to live in a doll to keep her around which tries to kill a group of orphan girls living with Mullins.
This is probably the best of the three Annabelle movies.
Connection with Universe: Janice from this film assumes the name Annabelle who was later adopted by the Higgins family, which directly connects it to Annabelle (2014).

The Nun (2018)

Plot: Based on one of the most famous demons of the franchise Valak aka The Nun.
The Film's story is quite engaging but suffers due to poor execution and the minimal horror factor. Despite mixed to negative reviews surprisingly it's the highest-grossing film of the franchise and all credit goes to the Conjuring films for making Valak famous among horror fans.
Connection with Universe: The ending of this film segues to the original Conjuring film during a lesson the Warrens were giving about demonic possession.

The Curse of La Llorona (2019)

Plot: “The Curse of La Llorona” is based on Mexican folklore and has a few good scares, but they’re used too extensively. Other than that nothing is interesting in this film.
This film was not promoted as a conjuring universe movie but was officially added to the franchise at a later point in time.
Connection with Universe: Father Perez, who has experience of fighting the devil within the Annabelle doll is the only character who connects this film with the rest of the franchise.

Annabelle Comes Home (2019)

Plot: The demonic doll gets lose from Warren's artifact room and starts to haunt Ed and Lorrain's daughter and her babysitter.
This film is just a mediocre entry to the franchise. It neither disappoints much nor brings forth something extraordinary out-of-box idea.
Connection with Universe: This film takes place just a year after the events of The Conjuring (2013) when Ed and Lorrain bring the possessed doll Annabelle to their home and lock her in their artifact room.
