Directed by: Bhanu Pratap Singh
Genre: Horror
Running time: 114 minutes

When an abandoned ship Sea-Bird reaches Mumbai's shore from nowhere, Prithvi (Vicky Kaushal) and his friend Riaz (Akash Dhar) are assigned to investigate and get rid of the ship when rumours of the ship being haunted start to circulate throughout the city. Soon Prithvi too starts experiencing the horrors of Sea-Bird.

Bhoot takes inspiration from so many Hollywood and Bollywood horror films and then incorporates them together into a single film. The most unrealistic thing in this movie is its ghost. The ghost is too funny. The story is compelling and quite interesting in the beginning, the eerie atmosphere adds thrill but soon loses its momentum halfway when things start to repeat again and again.

You are not gonna get many jump scares except the one we saw in the trailer. Bhoot provides nothing new to viewers. I don't understand this thing in a horror movie where the ghost first starts to play silly games with characters and then wants to kill them all of a sudden. Why ghosts are so confused always?

Vicky Kaushal and Akash Dhar on Sea Bird

Vicky Kaushal gives a strong performance as a broken man who considers himself responsible for his family's death. Other characters are very poorly written, mainly Ashutosh Rana as Prof. Joshi. Remember Prof. Agni Swaroop from Raaz (2002)? Yes, he's playing the same role, just with a different name but this time, without Lemon. This time he uses an electronic device for the detection of ghosts' presence. So innovative, isn't it?

The atmosphere is mostly tense which helps us to sustain throughout the film. Some unexpected turns and Vicky's acting keeps your interest in the film. I'm not gonna talk about plot holes because, like any other Bollywood horror film, it too has the same plot holes.

Vicky Kaushal and Sara Gesawat

Overall, Bhoot Part One -The Haunted Ship has an intriguing and well-crafted first half but prefers the same decade-old tools to scare in the second half. If you are bored and haven't watched any horror movie in a long time and want to have some fun, you can watch Bhoot Part One. It is flawed, predictable yet funny, and enjoyable due to its silliness.
