It is a 2007 drama film written
and directed
by Paul Thomas Anderson, stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Daniel Plainview an oilman, Paul Dano as Paul Sunday
/ Eli Sunday.
The film is set in the late 19th
and the early 20th century. The film tells the journey of Daniel
Plainview (an oilman) from his early days of business and presents different aspects of his behavior throughout.
Daniel purchases the property of
farmers where there is a huge amount of oil underneath and in return, he promises
the wealth that will come and nourish the locals if he started drilling
on their land. He promises that once drilling starts there will be plenty
pieces of
bread for the families, schools for children and the days of
miseries
will be the past. He calls himself a family man and his son
H.W. is the face of the family.
The film explores the effect of
success on Plainview's behavior. From outside he's like any other person but from inside he's poisonous. He admits in the movie that he hates most of the people and can't see anyone else succeed. In the end, when H.W. wishes
to start his own company, he says that this step will make him(H.W.) his competitor.
Other than Plainview, there is one
more character named Eli Sunday. He builds a church.
He's similar in nature to Plainview and sees himself as god's messenger but actually, religion is a business to Sunday. The movie explores the internal
violence of a human and where it can lead someone in his life.
The main motive of the film is not
showing killings or internal wars in business. It shows how greed of success and wealth,
competition and hatred damages one's life and soul. Even the locals
wanted to get rich sooner and so give their land to Plainview at a very low
price without thinking once. The greed of wealth and success paralyzes
one's mind and power of thinking.
Both the main characters, Daniel
and Eli just wanted to make their life better and no one cares about
other people in their life. They just exploited the locals and used them
for their benefits.
